Buying Firewood

  • Know how to measure the wood you paid for
       A Face Cord is measured as (42.66 Cubic Ft.) or 4'x8'x16"

  • Be sure you have received what you paid for
       Measure the height, width, and length of your stack prior to burning any wood

  • Purchase quality split hardwoods. Hardwood is more dense, so it burns longer.
       Typical hardwood species native to the Finger Lakes area include:
       Oak, Ash, Maple (several varities), Beech, Hickory, Cherry, and Birch

  • Only burn clean dry wood, that been split and properly seasoned

  • Always be sure to have your fireplace or woodstove, and chimney,
       inspected at regular intervals by a qualified professional

  • Always be sure to check that the fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide dectors in your home
       have fresh batteries, are properly installed, and functioning

  • Never use a fireplace, woodstove, or chimney that may be defective or in poor condition

  • Never operate a fireplace or woodstove that has not been installed
       by a properly trained professional, and inspected
